Boss of my Life

Figuring Out LIfe One Day at a Time

You Have to Fail to Succeed

January 18, 2017

Steve Jobs was fired from Apple during it’s infancy

Bill Gate’s first business venture went bankrupt

Abraham Lincoln Failed in business in 1831, suffered a nervous breakdown in 1836, and was defeated in his run for president in 1856

Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team, missed more than 9000 shots , lost almost 300 games, and missed the game winning shot 26 times.

Stephen King was a drug addict and alcoholic

J.K. Rowling was jobless and homeless

Walt Disney’s first business venture went bankrupt and he was fired from a newspaper for not being creative enough

Theodor Seuss Geisel (Dr Seuss) first book was rejected by 27 publishers

Jerry Seinfeld was booed off the stage during his early stand-up career

Sylvester Stallone was homeless, even selling his dog he could no longer feed, before writing Rocky, which was originally rejected by directors because Stallone demanded he star in it

What do all of these folks have in common?

They have all achieved great success.  Seriously, can you imagine life without some of these folks today?  I also bet you expected me to say they have all failed at one point in their lives, but while that is true the underlying key is that they didn’t give up.

How many times have you tried something new and failed?  It doesn’t have to be a full blown business venture.  What about simple things like changing your diet, or exercising more?  The one I am still personally struggling with is making sure the kitchen is clean before I go to bed.  Most of the stuff goes in the dishwasher, but if it needs to be unloaded then all hell breaks loose with my laziness.

So the next time you fail at something you really want, learn from it and keep going.  You’ll never know when you’ll catch you big break.

Go for it Rockstar

January 16, 2017

At what point in life do we go from “You can be anything you want” to “anything but that, that’s not responsible”?

As kids we are often encouraged to try new things.  If your child says they want to be an artist we encourage it, but when they want to major in art in college it’s a different story.  Someone is out there making it as an artist, why can’t it be you?  It seems like we strive for the comfy job, which provides a paycheck each week, no matter how much we hate it.  What would happen if we were to take a leap of faith and follow our dreams?  Fear of the unknown (because it really is unknown) often gets in the way of living our lives to the fullest potential.  What happens when you try something new and fail, is it worth just giving up on because it didn’t work out that one time.  Good thing we don’t tell that to little children learning how to walk or ride a bike.  Keep going.  You never really fail unless you give up trying.

I am not promoting recreational education and I sure as shit don’t want to pay for someone to get a liberal arts degree if they don’t have a plan in place for after they graduate.  I am also not saying to walk into your place of employment and just up and quit.  If you have a calling to do something outside your current comfort zone I say go for it.  Put a plan together.  Envision what it’ll be like at your new “job”.  It’ll be a lot of hard work.  There will be long hours, the universe will seem like it’s against you, but if you stick with it in the end it will totally be worth it

If you need help or don’t know where to start, send me an email and I can share with you what has kept me motivated.
